Welcoming the Fall & Holiday Season
Community schools and the many organizations that serve young people and families in our city are heading into a busy season. Fall and holiday celebrations are coming up, and we've done our best to gather information from across our network of partners about upcoming events. You'll find the ones we know about in this month's newsletter, and we recommend checking in with your nearest community school to find out the latest on what they will have going on over the next few months.
Along with the beauty of neighborly care and good will that this season brings, the holidays also have starker way of revealing the disparities that many in our communities face year-round. We hope this newsletter connects you with resources and opportunities that meet the varied needs of our community over the next few months.
If you know of any events or resources that you believe would be a benefit to include in our November or December newsletter, please use this form to tell us more.
APS High School Students Visit the ABC Shark Tank! $46K Awarded to Clubs & Enrichment Programs
At the beginning of September, ABC hosted its High School Shark Tank, in which students across APS high schools have the opportunity to receive additional funding for clubs and enrichment programs. Students from Atrisco Heritage Academy, Manzano, and West Mesa spent their September 5th Saturday at the ABC offices developing a pitch, receiving coaching from community and business leaders on strengthening their pitch, and making an ask to the "sharks" for funding.
Across the 3 high schools, 11 clubs participated and were awarded a grand total of $46,200 that will go towards staffing, supplies, and other general costs.
We are so grateful to our coaches and sharks for their engagement with this amazing group of students:
Alex Schwartz (Roadrunner Repair & Technical Services)
Bianca Romero (Bank of America)
Carlos Sanchez (Bernalillo County, Housing)
Eric Cook (Sandia National Laboratories)
Kari Ellis (Bernalillo County, Housing)
Kata Sandoval (City of Albuquerque, Office of Child Wellbeing)
Kevin Vautier (Abrazo Homes)
Ruben Garcia (JB Media Group)
Silvia Saenz (Bank of America)
Ziarra Kirsky (City of Albuquerque, Assistant to District 6 City Councilor)
And to the educators and school staff who work with these students to ensure that they have these type of expanded and enriched learning opportunities on their campuses: You are our heroes!
